Stari Grad Gourmet Shop - Za Pod Zub is hands down the best spot to grab wine, snacks, ice cream, and gifts to take home.
You can't miss this sweet little shop on the main drag through the old town, Srinjo Kola.
I have had the pleasure of becoming friends with the owners of this great Stari Grad Gourmet Shop - Za Pod Zub, Chloé & Yvan. They are an amazing pair who have done a wonderful job curating the best of what Hvar and Croatia have to offer.
Their goal is to offer premium products that they source from every corner of the island and all of Croatia. They seek out, support, and promote the passionate local people; the growers, farmers, winemakers, butchers, and cheesemongers who dedicate themselves to producing fine quality products.
Since you may be wondering about the name I have taken the following from their site.
What does Za Pod Zub Mean?
Our name Za Pod Zub, a Croatian expression meaning "good products for under the tooth", represents exactly what we do; offer a variety of tastes, textures, and flavors that will please your palate and stimulate your senses with every bite and provide new culinary experiences with our selection of carefully selected products from the island of Hvar and throughout Croatia, along with some of our favorite world influences.
The products
This gourmet shop offers a wide selection of products from Croatia.
Interested in packing a picnic for the beach -- you'll find plenty of meats and cheeses, Croatian chocolate, local honey, truffle products, and olive oils. And let's not forget the local beer and wine.
Yvan has a background in the hotel and restaurant industry and is a sommelier so needless to say the shop carries a range of local wines from amazing producers working only by hand with traditional grape varieties.
Looking for a craft beer? This is one of few spots in Stari Grad where you can find local craft brews. The two standard locals are Karlovačko and Ožujsko (similar to American Bud or Coors). If those aren't your thing ( they're not mine) be sure to grab some beers to go at ZPZ.
